In autumn 2026, Bethlen Square Theatre will host its second art residency as part of the OASis project. This time the setting shifts from the theatre's foyer to the Mátra Hiking Camp — a nature-based site in the Hungarian mountains, out of use for four years, waiting to be reimagined as a temporary cultural space.

The central question: how can a hiking campground become a cultural oasis, and how can an off-site residency stay meaningfully connected to a downtown theatre?

Bethlen is seeking 8 artists (5 international + 3 Hungary-based) from the following fields:

  • Visual arts / spatial practices

  • Performing arts / storytelling / media

  • Design / architecture

  • Digital / hybrid practices

Requirements

  • Fluency in English (mandatory)

  • Availability for the 15-day residency: 14–28 September 2026 (mandatory)

  • Participation in 2 online meetings: 18 August & 8 September

  • Experience in community-based work is a plus

What we offer

  • €1,300 gross artist fee

  • Accommodation at the Mátra campsite

  • Travel support up to €200

  • Shared materials budget and technical support
