Gerador - Portugal
Application Deadline - 24/05/2026

Set within one of Lisbon’s most distinctive cultural venues, the residency invites authors, creators, artists, and researchers from different fields to develop site-specific work in dialogue with the spaces, atmosphere, and daily life of the Goethe-Institut. Housed in the remarkable Valmor Palace, the institute offers a layered environment where historical architecture, cultural activity, and public use intersect, creating a strong setting for artistic experimentation and public engagement.

Applicants are invited to propose an intervention for one of three designated areas within the Goethe-Institut building:

Intervention Areas
Glass in the cafeteria – a highly visible area in one of the most frequented parts of the building, where people gather throughout the day to eat, study, work, and spend time. It is also located near the entrance to the Auditorium.
Wall on the staircase leading to the cafeteria – a prominent wall in a transition area used daily by visitors moving between different parts of the Valmor Palace, including the cafeteria, the Library, and the outdoor garden.
Garden wall and fence – an outdoor intervention area located in the garden of the Valmor Palace, surrounding one of the terrace spaces and remaining visible both to those using the area and to people passing through it.

The residency programme is structured around three main phases:

Programme Phases
Initial design and production phase – after selection, artists will be given a defined period to further develop their concept and begin production. During this phase, follow-up meetings will be held with Gerador.
Artistic residency – the residency will last 7 working days and will support the final development of the selected works. The residency should include interaction with the local community and will culminate in the presentation of an output as part of the Artistic Journey Showcase.
Exhibition – from 6 October to 1 November 2026, the works developed during the residency will be presented in a collective exhibition at the Goethe-Institut in Lisbon, alongside five works created by local artists.
